Budding momentum

I have just begun a new local project. I was persuaded to take on the Chairmanship of the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society.  The charity was started in Queen Victoria’s reign and is now in its 106th year but had dwindled over the last few years and was in danger of disappearing altogether.

At one point its annual show was one of the most important gradening and food events in the country.  Even today its credentials are impressive.  The Society’s Patron is the Queen, our show is held in the ground of Windsor Castle and the range of trophies and silver cups (some given by members of the Royal Family) are truly impressive.

My aim is to bring the society up to date by using its heritage and ‘Downton Abbey’ ambiance and combine it with a more contemporary sustainable, environmental and organic theme around gardening in general and grow your own, cook your own food.

In the past the society’s Vice Presidents were the good and the great of the aristocracy so today we have persuaded some celebrities, famous gardeners and chefs to lend their names and hopefully their presence and cooking to our show.

This week we have finished the schedule for the summer show so now you can see the categories you can enter and get growing!  Call our number 24 hours to get your schedule sent to you on 01753 449 449.

In case you are interested here is a link to a site where we have archived previous show schedules going back years www.ucollect2.com and put in the search tool “Royal Windsor” Rose.

We have also just started our fund raising for the show and I am very grateful to qualitygardentools.com for donating some excellent prizes for the Junior competition.

Our web site needs an update (www.royalwindsorroseshow.co.uk) but we are just doing one thing at a time as funds allow, you will however be able to download the schedule from it in a few days time.

If you want to be a part of this project I am looking for volunteers to help me and my committee, or you can simply join the society by ringing me on the number above.  If you are not sure then come and check us out on July 16th in St Georges School Windsor Castle…see you there!
